Recommended Ammunition & Safety Distances
Safety is our top priority. These are conservative, practical recommendations to help reduce ricochet and target damage.
Handguns (recommended use — ideal on 3/8”):
•Suitable calibers: .22 LR, .380 ACP, 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, .44 Magnum.
•Suggested safe engagement distance: 10–25 yards (shorter-range precision work okay, but stay mindful of over-penetration and backstops).
•Use standard lead or jacketed soft-point rounds; avoid steel-core or armor-piercing rounds.
Rifles (NOT recommended on 3/8” for routine rifle use):
•Important: 3/8” AR500 targets are optimized for pistol calibers. For routine rifle-caliber shooting (e.g., .223/5.56, .308/7.62), we recommend a thicker plate (minimum 1/2” AR500 or greater) and longer engagement distances.
•If you must use rifle-caliber rounds on a thinner target for a single controlled shot, follow strict safety protocols, but the safer option is to upgrade to 1/2” or 3/4” AR500 for rifle use.
•Never shoot armor-piercing, steel-core, or tracer rounds at any AR500 target.
Range Safety Reminders (please follow):
•Always wear eye and ear protection.
•Use proper backstops and a cleared impact area behind the target.
•Stand to the side when reloading or checking the target; never stand directly in front of the target.
•Inspect the target before each session for cracks, excessive pitting, or deformation — replace if damaged.
•Avoid steel-core / armor-piercing projectiles — they greatly increase ricochet risk and plate wear.
•Keep bystanders well behind the shooting line.
Care & Maintenance
•Clean lead splatter and powder residue periodically with a brass brush.
•Repaint with high-temp steel-friendly spray paint for visibility; avoid thick paint layers that may hide pitting.
•Store dry to limit surface rust; touch up edges if needed.
