Arrangement & Safety — RangePro™ 7”x12” AR500 Mini Steel Target
By Mitchell & Son Body Armor Outlet LLC
Arranging your targets
•Place the target away from buildings, vehicles, and other objects you want to keep free from debris. Targets will deflect debris from projectile impacts — choose a location that protects people and property.
•The target must have a proper backstop behind it to stop missed shots. Always consider what is beyond the target and orient it in a safe direction.
Caution — Important Safety Notes
•Bullet fragments may travel toward the shooter. All persons in the area must wear ear and eye protection.
•Bullet fragments and ricochet can injure shooters, spectators, and damage nearby objects. Use steel targets at your own risk. Shooting at steel targets can be dangerous — exercise caution at all times.
•These guidelines are recommendations only. Mitchell & Son Body Armor Outlet LLC accepts no liability for improper use.
⸻
Minimum Shooting Distances for AR500 Steel Targets
These are suggested minimum distances. Follow them to reduce risk and prolong target life.
1/4” AR500 (recommended for pistols & light use)
•.22 Rimfire, 9mm, .38 Spl, .44 Spl, .45 ACP — minimum 8 yards
•.357, .40 S&W, .44 Mag — minimum 12 yards
•Shotgun w/ lead birdshot — minimum 12 yards
•Shotgun w/ standard velocity 00 buck — minimum 20 yards
•Shotgun w/ standard velocity slug — minimum 50 yards
•For velocities over 3000 fps MV use at 200 yards minimum
•Handguns: use no closer than 10 yards
•Rifles: use no closer than 100 yards
3/8” AR500 (for heavier rifle calibers)
•.30-30 — minimum 100 yards
•7.62 / .308 / .30-06 — minimum 150 yards
•.204 Win / .223 / 5.56 — minimum 200 yards
Do NOT use XM855 (green tip), M193, steel-core, or other armor-piercing projectiles on steel targets — doing so is dangerous and voids the warranty. These projectiles are easily identified if used and will void coverage.
When using rifles, the increased distances protect both the target and the shooter. Impact velocities approaching 3000 fps can cause pitting and edge chipping even with AR500 steel.
⸻
Rotate Your Targets to Extend Life
•Our targets are designed for easy reversal. Rotate or reverse your targets regularly to extend service life.
•Repeated impacts cause slight expansion of the surface, which can lead to bowing or pitting. Rotating the plate spreads wear and improves safety and longevity.
⸻
Final Notes
•Always inspect targets before use. Remove and retire any target exhibiting severe pitting, cracking, or deformation.
•Use appropriate mounting hardware and ensure the target is securely hung. Chains, hooks, or T-post hangers are common—mounting hardware not included.
